Antec is following up to their successful Quattro Line of PSU’s by updating their 1200Watt model. With Intel and AMD 6 to 12 core chips just around the corner, Antec is thinking ahead. With extreme cooling, Intels gulftown (6 core 12 thread) architecture has already been shown to draw 400+ watts and 45A draw at peak load. Load transition in a benchmark like 3DMark Vantage can put alot of stress on your PSU from the sudden spike in current. This can further droop your 12v rail and potentially end up crashing your system.
Antec engineers were present at a Team PURE bench session with k|ngp|n and shamino taking measurements as they overclocked a gulftown Core i7 ES chip. They have also been taking note of the increasingly large and demanding multi GPU setups from both Nvidia and ATi (up to 4 cards in one system from either vendor is possible). They have used this knowledge and testing to produce one monster PSU capable of handling both large GPU setups and a high draw CPU.
One of the innovations Antec presents, is the worlds first adjustable 12V rail. By turning a dial on the PSU you can manually adjust the 12V rail up to 12.4V. This will help bleeding edge overclocks remain stable under heavy loading.
The other nice feature of this power supply are the 2200uF capacitors at the end of each line. These will help eliminate ripple, which can also cause an overclock to fail.
Other points of interest include, adjustable fan speeds via a dial on the back of the unit, sturdy 24pin connector housing (see pictures below), 100A single rail divided into six 38A rails via current monitoring, 2×8 pin ATX cpu connectors, 6×6 pin and 6×6+2 pin PCI-Express connectors via 6 REAL lines (each capped with a 2200uF capacitor also).
We will bring you more regarding this PSU soon, when our review sample arrives!
